Basilicata is a region of splendid southern Italy, bordering the Tyrrhenian Sea and the Ionian Sea.
Its largest cities are Potenza and Matera, the latter known for its stones (the famous Sassi di Matera), which is a large hillside complex of houses carved out of the rock and dating back thousands of years.
All this is part of the Murgia Materana Park, a gorge between Matera and Montescaglioso, comprising around 150 churches that have the distinction of being all carved into the rock.
